ABOUT US

Welcome Home!

Hickory Hammock at Johns Lake is a gated HOA of nearly 500 homes in Winter Garden, Florida. It is a neighborhood devoted to nature and resort-style living.

Three waterways dominate Hickory Hammock: the 2,500-acre Johns Lake and the smaller Lake Burnett and Lake Claire. A nature trail winds through a wooded area and our residents enjoy natural Florida flora and fauna, including osprey, bald eagles, sand hill cranes and Spanish Moss-covered oak trees. Amenities include a zero-entry community pool, clubhouse, fitness center, tennis and sand volleyball courts, as well as a dog park, playgrounds, parks and community pier.

Our community consists of single-family homes and townhomes. Many of our lake-front homes have private docks. Located within Hickory Hammock and on a peninsular on Johns Lake is Emerald Pointe, a neighborhood of 28 homes located on spacious waterfront property.

In addition to property, Hickory Hammock at Johns Lake is a neighborhood of people. Community events are held throughout the year.  Volunteers have opportunities to serve through committees and an elected board of directors. Hickory Hammock is managed by Artemis Lifestyles.

“On December 1, 1909, I arrived in Winter Garden just a barefoot boy but full of curiosity to see the many wonderful things I had heard about back in the Carolinas.” – W.B. Burch, 1940

You think you live somewhere brand new, but really, Hickory Hammock has history. The lands we all live on were once owned by the Burch family, one of the original citrus growers in Winter Garden.

W.B. Burch (born in Chesterfield County, South Carolina) arrived in Florida before city water and electric lights with nothing but a dream to make a living in the ever so peaceful yet growing Winter Garden. At the time, Florida was known for its lettuce and cucumber growing. The Winter Garden Citrus Growers Association was created in 1910 as people began to plant oranges to make a living.

Burch started his business by sending fruit orders to his grandmother in South Carolina. By the time he was 21, Burch was one of the biggest orange buyers and shippers in Winter Garden, only matched by Frank Roper, another orange seller. With his success in the citrus business, Burch lived comfortably in his 17-room Southern-style mansion on Johns Lake with his pet peacocks.

After World War I, Burch discovered his true passion: journalism. Burch wrote for a newspaper before starting his own paper called The West Orange Herald. W.B. passed away at the age of 92 in 1986. His children also lived notable lives in Winter Garden.

Hickory Hammock was the original name given to this area by the Burch family. For those who live on Lake Claire, Claire was Burch’s daughter. For those who live on Lake Burnett, well, that was the patriarch’s middle name.

So there you have it Hickory Hammock, our neighborhood is a slice of Winter Garden history!
